Car Songs – Music and Cars
There are songs about the cars, the engines & the drivers, but I wonder how many remember or have this one: “Here Comes the Munster Koach”
A few years back I was at a car show and asked which of the cars there I’d like to take home. The one you see in this photo is the one I chose! When I was a kid I built a model of the car and it’s always been my favorite. I still have that model, but unfortunately I never owned the car … only the song that was on the Munsters album. More about my Munsters Connection on my site.
Anyone out there have another car song to share? How about a story to go with it about your car … a model, remote control toy, or otherwise?

Ah, Vance…don’t get me started on what kind of memories cars evoke. Some of them I’d rather not mention here…but I do remember an ex bf wanna be punker(failed miserably at trying to be one)trying to sing that well known Ramones song while speeding in his Grand Fury…uhhh; dunno if I can mention the title here and I countered him with another Ramones tune Beat On The Brat.
OK…’nuff said about that. Anyway, I have vague memories of hearing the Sweet’s Little Willy in the car while my mom drove me in the aforesaid Belvedere. Who would think that years later, I would be singing harmony to that song with you, Vance.
BTW…for all you musicians…is it just me or does the first line of the chorus of Little Willy sound a bit like “Shave and a hair cut, two bits?” I swear, it does; listen carefully.
Thanks for the post, Caryn. You never know what music memories cars might inspire … why not a 60s car with 70s music! Don’t know what year your mom’s car was, but Richard Petty won the Daytona 500 in this 1966 Plymouth Belvedere.
I was driving down the highway the other day through a pretty remote part of where I live when this came on over the radio. I cranked it up and was singing to it when this car pulled up alongside of me in the passing lane, but didn’t pass me. I looked over and this very attractive girl was smiling at me – then the song broke into chorus and I saw that she was singing the same song I was. It was pretty cool…we were only two people for miles up/down road, in separate cars jamming to same song.
Anyway, I got my taste of rock and popular music and would ask my mother who the artists were. Yes, I could remember songs like, I’m A Believer, Rock The Boat, Come And Get Your Love among others and singing along. To make a long story short, music would play an important part in my life.
On a humorous note, around age 7, the song Lady Marmalade was popular and I sang, or tried to sing along with the chorus, not having any idea what it meant!
Looks like it was Paul Revere and the Raiders who released SS 396 in 1967. Here’s the description on the YouTube video:
Side two contains “SS 396″ Performed by Paul Revere and the Raiders, they recorded this as a service to columbia records. The “Swinging Chevy circle” 45 rpm record and record sleeve was created exclusively for Chevrolet car dealers. The label also states that “This complimentary copy is a Columbia special product and is free to customers who test drove a new 1967 Camaro.” Side 1 is Camaro performed by The Cyrkle.
Shelley, I guess we were both right! I am well familiar with Waylon’s Dukes of Hazzard theme but have never heard the song, General Lee done by Johnny Cash and written expressly for the car itself! I have to give you a pat on the back, Girl!
NOW…who remember’s the song SS 396 which I believe was done by the Beach Boys? I can’t remember all of it, but it started out, “Forget about your Henleys and your GTO’s; I’ve got a new machine and it really rolls..” and then later in the song, “Look at her go (look at her go) yeah she sits real low (sits real low)…whaaa-oooo…feel the tires hit the road”. Any takers on that one? How about you, Vance?
OK, now I just HAD to listen/watch the video and, yes V-Elf, that IS Johnny Cash as I said…so Waylon may have sung the theme weekly on the show, but Mr. Cash’s version was what went through my mind when the question was first asked. Yep Nancy, I remember Waylon doing the narration.
