The Monkees sing That Was Then, This Is Now across the country and beyond during their 2011 45th Anniversary Tour.
Hard to beleive it’s been 25 years since the Monkees released my song That Was Then, This Is Now! I’m sure most of you are familiar with the Monkees song, but here’s a “live” version of my original release with the Mosquitos in 1985 that lead to the Monkees making the song a milliion seller.
They used it on their album Then and Now … the Best of the Monkees and as the theme of their comeback tour in 1986. Stay tuned for more on my website in recognition of this anniversary. The second track is from the same live performance …

Whoa….a bit steamy here this morning, but it has nothing to do with the weather. The first song that came up on this site for me today was I’m Every Lover. The plaintive lyrics that these two people will end up together and there is no way she can get his image out of her mind, no matter who she is with,……..come on, that song is just HOT!!
Hmmm, this is a tough one. I’ve heard Vance sing at the assisted living center that I work at–one resident can’t keep her hands off him lol–and I’ve listened to him perform his originals and more recent covers. In addition, I’ve had the honor of singing with him–hey Vance, what’s wrong with Little Willy; you always tease me about that! But in answer to what is/are my favorites, I think that would have to be I’d Love To Love You as I love the–what I believe is–call and response in the chorus. I’m a musician myself and I look for those nuances. But I do find that song to just grab me for the reason I just mentioned(call and response). I also like Vance’s style of performing the Beatles’ Please Please Me.
I have to somewhat agree with Shelley about his voice…about the lower, throaty range of his tenor that creates the goosebumps. Yet his falsettos will take you for a ride as well.
Garsh, I think I typed enough. Is there a rock journalist position open?
I have to add more about the above song than just the content. The melody is also stirring and while Vance’s voice on the higher octaves is fabulous, it is the lower, throaty part of the melody that creates the goosebumps.
Strangely enough, one of my favorites is Say Goodbye. Although the theme is a sad one, the feelings of just being honest enough with someone you care(d) about to allow them the dignity and self-worth to leave in style hit home. There is also the question that the “bad” feelings are only being imagined and that this relationship still has potential to grow and flourish.
