On this cold frozen February night I pulled out the album Sugar and Spice by the Cryan Shames and threw it on the turntable…all of a sudden it’s summer of 1967 and I’m dancing the Pony and the Jerk in my bedroom again! Nothing brings back memories of summer like the Cryan Shames’ title song, Sugar and Spiceand their version of “If I Needed Someone”.
As for traveling memories, I remember one particular summer day when Dad loaded the Chevy station wagon with picnic goodies and drove the family to Pittsburgh’s Kennywood Amusement Park for a day of thrill rides. He saved the biggest treat for our arrival, however, and took my older sister and me by total surprise by steering us to the stage area where the Music Explosion were performing LIVE that day!!! Seeing them sing their huge hit A Little Bit Of Soul will forever be my ultimate summer memory and ruined me for life, as it was my first REAL concert and I’ve been a rabid concert-goer ever since!
One of the happiest songs for me, and one of my favorite drinking songs back in my college days, is Three Dog Night’s Joy To The World. It always makes me smile, and gets my toes tapping – it makes me wanna dance!
Whenever I hear Hot Fun In The Summertime by Sly & the Family Stone, I am transported back to junior high, sitting on the curb under the street light in Farrell PA with all of my friends, singing and swaying to that song via someone’s transistor radio…
or In the Summertime by Mungo Jerry … another happy song from that era! Whoops, did I hear the curfew going off at 10PM and our parents calling us in for the night? Another happy summer memory when the curfew would go off and our local tv stations would broadcast, “It’s 10 o’clock…Where is your TEENAGER? Do you KNOW? Do you CARE?”
Well, along with the 59th St. bridge song, S&G also have me smiling on “At the Zoo” – I do believe it, I DO believe it’s true!
Also, Spanky and our Gang starting out with “Blue skies, sunshine, what a day to take a walk in the park …” … “and what a day for sayin’ right out loud “I love you!” ” Lazy day …”
V-Elf, loved it! I showed my son your link last night, and he just walked out of the room shaking his head…….but then, he’s 17 and still thinks all adults are a “bit touched!” (lol)
Recently, at the Rochester 60s Spectacular the New Rascals sang, It’s a Beautiful Morning. Now, I’m by no means a morning person, but hearing that song, brought me back to Saturday mornings when I’d bring my “suitcase” phonograph out onto the front porch and play my favorite 45s and dance on the lawn before anyone in the house or the neighborhood woke up….who knows, maybe I woke them all up with my shenanigans, but boy, the memory of dancing cartwheels on the lawn to that song and many others brings back some good vibrations!
Dana, I remember singing Yummy, yummy, yummy, I’ve got love in my tummy to my young son – who to this day can’t believe such a silly song could have ever existed – only his lunatic mom could have made it up!
I’m with you on the Bridge Song. Done by Simon and Garfunkel or Harper’s Bizarre, it says “Happy”. Also think of the two Vanity Fair songs: Hitchin’ A Ride and Early In The Morning when I want to dance or lift up my spirits. Then again, I’ve heard someone sing the song I’m Into Something Good, which is full of hope. hahahahaha
When I hear the opening notes of Good Morning Starshine it always brings a smile to my face & the same memory … holding my newborn baby daughter in my arms as the song played on the radio and I sang along:
Gliddy glub gloopy
Nibby nabby noopy
La la la lo lo
Sabba sibby sabba
Nooby abba nabba
Le le lo lo
Tooby ooby walla
Nooby abba naba
Early morning singing song
Who can’t smile when trying to remember THOSE lyrics!

Feeling groovy, it’s my favourite time of year. One of my favourite songs from the sixties. Happy songs always make your life better.
