Silly Songs – The neighborhood

November 21st, 2009 Vance Leave a comment Go to comments

sesame_streetI used to watch TV and dream of being one of the kids on Sesame Street. I can hear Oscar singing “I love trash. Anything dirty or dingy or dusty. Anything, ragged or rotten or rusty. Yes, I love trash.” I would sing along and imagine I was was hanging out in the neighborhood with Oscar, Cookie Monster and the gang. Lance was one of the kids – why not Vance! Remember Big Bird’s alphabet song? Don’t get me started!

Maybe the songs weren’t really so silly … Sesame Street DID get me started!

How about you? Post your comment here about a silly song you sang as a child … maybe still sing as an adult!

    @Caryn Well, certainly music and laughter compliment each other and oft go hand-in-hand. I have one Muppet Show video. We need to pool our resources and get each season. Mine has that classic R&B rendition of “It’s Not Easy to Be Green“. Were truer words ever spoken?

    In response to ShelleyCT: The Muppet Show is one of my all time fave shows! I think Jim Henson was a genius. I have some VHSs that I got from eBay of TMS, hopefully if I have some extra money, I’ll buy a set. Gosh, would I be laughing to the point of no return those nights–I believe it was Monday night. I can’t remember who was my favorite character–I think I liked them all.

    @Pinky Catching up with video links for some of the early posts …

    Pinky :

    Well, I never heard the song on TV, but every now and then I still here Patti Page sing “How Much Is That Doggie In The Window” on the radio … usually on Rock and Roll Heaven.net! It brings back fond memories of my puppy days, but I DO feel a bit silly when my human starts singing along!

    Hobo :

    @Pinky Silly songs, silly humans! My human performs on stage today because I watched TV with with him and taught him how to strut his stuff to “meow, meow, meow, meow – meow, meow, meow, meow – meow, meow, meow, meow … meow!” (2nd verse same as the first!)

    @V-Elf
    And it is really WEDNESDAY, which is “Anything Can Happen Day”…..such as I call it “Tuesday”. “Today is the day which is filled with surprises….nobody knows what’s gonna happen.”

    @ShelleyCT What time is it? … It’s Howdy Doody Time!

    Did you know that Clarabelle (Bob Keeshan) on Howdy Doody would later be, none other than … Captain Kangaroo!

    It may not be on TV today, but kids (including kids at heart!) can watch The Mickey Mouse Club? on YouTube!

    Being a couple years older than you Vance, my parents tell me that at 2 years of age I accosted them with the revelation that I was “embarrassed” having to go next door to watch The Howdy Doody Show each day. I thought my “Daddy” should buy a TV. He saved up and he did. All for the love of a cowboy and his short wooden pal. HEY EVERYONE, WHAT TIME IS IT?? IT’S HOWDY DOODY TIME!! (song begins) Then Captain Kangaroo and THEN….The Mickey Mouse Club! Hey, this is Tuesday….did you know it’s Guest Star Day?

    Ah, “Sesame Street”…that was the television show that I grew up on in my wee years. Oh gosh, I learned to play the theme song by ear(before taking formal music lessons)and would hum and sing along to, oh my, I don’t know how many songs. I don’t remember which was my favorite; I think it was “M’Na M’Na.” Would you believe that when I entered my first year of college, in a music appreciation class, the professor actually used a recording of Sesame Street’s “High Middle Low.” I didn’t know how to react…imagine using Sesame Street in a college music appreciation class!
